Hand Knotted : A Beginner’s Guide to Patterns

All our we have for sale are entirely knotted by hand and are imported from all over the world. The variety of cultural influence that can be seen in our showroom is simply awe inspiring. These wool masterpieces have eclectic cultural backgrounds, and can be seen in traditional patterns, more modern patterns, geometric patterns, floral patterns, patterns of various rugs & oriental carpet, and more. Antique

The terms carpet & oriental carpet are often used interchangeably, but antique rugs come from Iran. oriental rugs comes from India, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc.

In 1987 there was a Persian rug embargo that was lifted in 2000. Recently the embargo was reinstated on September 29, 2010. The U.S. can no longer import antique rugs, but we still have a few  for sale in many sizes and in several patterns and colors.

Antique rug patterns are intricate & fine, and tend to be geometric or floral. Some rug designs include Heriz Rugs, Kazak Rugs, Hamadan Rugs, Kashan Rugs, Tabriz Carpet, Baluch Rugs, Herati Rugs, Prayer Rugs, Antique  Bakhtiari Rugs, Hand Knotted Nain Rugs, etc. We have a large selection of these Hand Knotted Rugs and Antique Estate Pieces in our showroom for your selection.

Tibetan Rugs

Hand Knotted Rugs are slightly carved to create 3D relief. Tibetan rugs have a higher knot density than most traditional oriental rugs. They are made of wool from Highland Sheep which is a thicker wool than most other kinds.

Traditional Rugs usually depict animals. The most common Hand Knotted Carpet Patterns are Tiger Rugs, Tibetan Dragon Carpet, Tibetan Tantric Rugs, Modern and Contemporary Rug Patterns., etc. We also have a selection of Antique Rugs and Semi Antique in our showroom.

Chinese Rugs / Sino Persians

Our Oriental rugs are 220 Line Sino, made of 100% wool with silk highlights and vibrant Swiss chrome dyes. Chinese patterns can often be very similar to Designs. They are perfect for spaces requiring delicate floral patterns and pastel color palates, although other colors and designs are available.. As China becomes more industrialized Hand Knotted Rugs are becoming more rare. The most common with Patterns are Hand Knotted Kashan Rugs, Tabriz Rugs, Aubusson Rugs, Bijar Rugs, etc.

Turkish Rugs / Anatolian Rugs

Turkish Rugs are also sometimes known as Anatolian Rugs, meaning ‘land of the rising sun’. These Rugs are either flat woven or come with a pile, they usually have large geometric patterns, and can be available in larger sizes. Like Antique, Turkish Rugs vary in style. We also carry Saddle Bags, and Saddle Blankets when available. We keep a stock of Antique Rugs in our showroom.

A Note on &

Antique Rugs and semi-antique rugs are very popular. Because oriental carpet is so durable, one that is over 50 years old often looks brand new. We have antique hand knotted  oriental rugs ranging in age from 40-100+ years in stock all year round. We often have Antique, Antique, Caucasian Rugs, Antique Rugs, Antique Rugs, and Antique Navajo Rugs. Pakistani Rugs

Pakistani Rugs have around 300 knots per square inch, and are made with 100% fine New Zealand wool; some have vegetal dyes, and others have Swiss chrome dyes.

These oriental rugs are hand knotted in Northern Pakistan, and have very intricate patterns that are very masterfully crafted, unique, and come in a large array of patterns and designs. It can take up to two years of fully devoted time for a weaver to finish just one oriental carpet. Pakistani Rugs are true masterpiece works of art.

The most well known Patterns of Rugs are Zieglar Hand Knotted Rugs, Gabbeh Carpet, Ottoman Rugs, Mogul Rugs, Kerman Rugs, Bakhtiari Rugs, Aubusson Carpet, Pakistani Tabriz Rugs, Oushak Rugs, etc.

Indian Rugs / Indian Agra Rugs

Hand Knotted Rugs tend to have large floral patterns, they can have an earthy palate, and they are all finished with a walnut wash. Indian has a thick lush pile, and classic design. Many of our customers have said these rugs simply “look comfortable”. Many rugs use Agra patterns, which are named after a major city in India. Some other common Rugs are Sarouk Rugs, Herati Rugs, etc.

Afghan Rugs

Many Afghan Rugs are made by refugees that fled to Iran or Pakistan when Afghanistan was at war with the Soviet Union. These patterns are a great example of Hand Knotted Rugs. A Common Afghan Rug Pattern today are war rugs which describe a historical event, mostly wars, for example, the war between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union. We keep a large variety of Afghan War Rugs in small sizes at our showroom, and also have other Afghan Patterns from time to time.

Navajo Rugs & Blankets

All of our Navajo Rugs are 100% authentic, and most are Antique Rugs and Blankets. Navajo Rugs are mostly flat woven, and typically have geometric designs. The Navajo people are from the southwestern part of the United States. According to Navajo Mythology, Spider Woman, a Navajo Deity, taught the Navajo people how to weave.
