Are your rugs made with Child Labor?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! All of our handmade oriental rugs are Rugmark certified. Rugmark is an independent third party who verifies that the rugs are made by skilled workers, and do not break labor laws designed to protect children. Our rugs are intricate and well crafted, beyond the scope of what a child can make.

Do all of your rugs have fringe?

All authentic Handmade Oriental Carpet have fringe - the fringe is the backbone of the rug, what the weavers weave ‘on’. If you do not like the look of fringe we suggest using double sided tape to stick the fringe behind the rug. WE DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE SUGGEST CUTTING OR TRIMMING THE FRINGE! This can lead to injury to the rug, voids the warranty on the rug, and lowers the resale value of the piece.

How can you tell the finest Handmade Oriental Carpet from inferior quality or machine made carpet being passed off as the ‘real deal’?

Anytime a rug has backing over the knots, it is an indication that the rug is not a true handmade rug. We only carry the finest quality rugs from each of the countries that we import from. Each countries' rugs are judged by different standards. The best way to judge the quality of the rug is by the quality, and not quantity of the knots, and how you feel about the design. The rug will be in your home for a long time, and with proper care, will last generations. How you feel about the rug is the most important factor when choosing your next family heirloom. Do the symbols on Hand Knotted Oriental Carpet and Antique Persian Rugs have any meaning?

A Persian Rug — like a song — has a rhythm, cadence, and tone. Just like there is no one way to sing a song, there is no right way to see an Oriental Carpet. The person who made the rug might have observed things in nature or their imagination or surroundings that she or he then conveys in the rug's design. Often we do not know the intent behind some of the designs because we do not know who the artist is and, therefore, we are left to enjoy and interpret it ourselves.
Some symbols and possible interpretations include:

  • Camel - wealth, prosperity
  • Cypress Tree - strength, endurance
  • Tree of Life - eternity--path from earth to heaven
  • Chicken, Rooster - dawn of a new day, fresh start, sexual prowess
  • Bird - paradise, faith
  • Star - spirituality, good luck
  • Carnation - happiness
  • Pomegranate - abundance, fertility
  • Paisley design - flame, universe
  • Jug - purification
